“They was doing mashups before mashups even existed.”

This is how Ice Cube Celebrates The Eames. Fun fact: Ice Cube studied architectural drafting before becoming a rapper.

He’s also celebrating L.A.: “Who are these people who got a problem with L.A.? Maybe they just mad they don’t live here.”

"We need to think smaller, not bigger, and with more attention to craft of execution. The craft of synthesis through sensemaking is not in visual details, as most designers have been trained, and it’s not in the application of our talents for the corporate machine, as most designers have accepted. It’s in intellectual details, specificity, and rigor; it’s in directives towards the focused and local, and it manifests as hard, hard work."

What’s especially interesting is the role that the designer can play in this scenario. Instead of creating new products and services from scratch, the designer must creatively reinterpret from what already exists. The designer also plays a meta role in shaping “the conditions to replicate ideas” instead of the ideas themselves. Designers become facilitators of people, giving them the tools they need to enact change.
